HI ALL,
TODAY IS A SPECIAL DAY OF COURSE. A LOT OF MEANING RESIDES IN THIS DAY AND IS FELT BY EVERY FREEDOM LOVING PERSON, AND WELL IT SHOULD. SO MUCH SACRIFICE HAS GONE INTO MAKING THE USA A GREAT NATION THAT NOTHING CLOSE COMES TO IT EXCEPT FOR SOME EUROPEAN BATTLES.
I AM PART OF A GROUP THAT SHARES INFORMATION, AND ONE OF OURS HAS WRITTEN THE FOLLOWING.
Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?
Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.
Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.
Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.
Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.
They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.
What kind of men were they?
Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.
Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.
Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.
Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.
Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.
At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.
Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.
John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.
So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.
Remember: freedom is never free!
BESIDES THESE BRAVE SOULS THAT GAVE THEIR ALL FOR THIS THING CALLED FREEDOM, I THOUGH WHAT ABOUT NOW? WHO FIGHTS THIS BATTLE NOW? THE MORE I THOUGHT THE MORE I UNDERSTOOD THAT A LOT FIGHT THIS FIGHT EVEN NOW. SO TO REMIND US AND MYSELF OF THE PRESENT FIGHT, I TOOK A MOMENT AND WROTE THIS.
A FREEDOM SONG
A freedom song this fine day
Is often done real bright
With tales of strength and sacrifice
A rider’s lantern in the night
But what of lonely kids in bed
What of these heroes of our light
And mothers looking for some bread
Unsung and out of sight
The freedoms won have done their job
And given all good hope
Of fine new toys and apples to bob
Hot water and fragrant soap
But in dark alleys come a cry
That undisturbed will fail
As homeless urchin’s heaving sigh
Falls lost in empty sail
Forgotten these ones remain
Our undisputed task
To help to care and clear the stain
Generations need to ask
What is real freedom if not this thing
That still remains residing
In country corners lingering
No judge presiding
We need to heed unspoken thought
We see those lost all day
Comforting bunting in the loft
The unheard must have their say
Freedom means all souls are loved
Even those with dirt
Pushed and pulled and fiercely shoved
A Samaritan gives his shirt
We have this gift of freedom still
An independence strong
A swelling pride filled with will
Salvation will not be long
The homeless weary depend on this
Our innermost desire
To reach that place we call our soul
To complete and to inspire
No more will strife and hunger best
If we do this today
And carry freedom to the rest
Where food and shelter lay
Happy 4th of July to all
And may you think this twice
The freedom earned will not fall
Like snake eyes in the dice
If you choose with eyes unblinking
To rescue those that now are sinking
