3 Ancient Spiritual Concepts Science Helps Us Understand – How Spirit & Science Interact

In response to popular demand, it is time to formally make a bridge between the worlds of science and spirit. How do they interact with one another? What evidence is there to support spiritual concepts and philosophies? The truth is, there is so much scientific evidence out there that you could fill an Encyclopedia. In this article, we will look at three of the most important spiritual topics that science helps us understand.
Before we look at them, it’s important to remember that science is just one way to measure natural phenomenon. Because it studies the natural world (and not things which are beyond nature), there are some topics which are simply inaccessible using the scientific method. But even following the rigidity of the scientific method, we can still see an overwhelming amount of evidence that gives credence to spiritual concepts people have been teaching for thousands of years.
Spirit is consciousness. Science is the measure and study of the natural world. When you begin to see how consciousness mingles with physical reality (or how spirit interacts with science), a world of total magic opens up.
Let’s take a look.
1) Universal consciousness
In Hinduism, ‘Brahman’ is the unchanging reality amidst and beyond the world. Everything in existence exists is and as Brahman, which is though to be the highest level of reality and the creative principle out of which all things were born. It is the only thing that exists, and everything you see and experience (including your own consciousness) is a manifestation and formation of Brahman.
Brahman is really just another word for universal consciousness, and is one of the most influencial spiritual teachings in Vedic philosophy and Hinduism. So how does this tie into science? Everything in the universe is made up of molecules, which are made of atoms, which are made of subatomic particles, which are made of quarks, which are made of vibrating superstrings.
These superstrings are thought to be made of consciousness by people like Dr. Amit Goswami, Dr. Michio Kaku, and Dr. John Hagelin. At the fundamental levels of reality lies a field of universal consciousness that peculates up through the layers of reality and ultimately gives rise to subjectivity. Here is Dr. John Hagelin explaining more about the scientific concept of this Unified Field. If you can really understand and come to grips with this video, you will begin to see the bigger picture:
Every mystic and guru through the ages taught us that reality is not merely material, but is a manifestation of a universal intelligence that lies at the basis of everything. Some call this God, or Brahman, or Source, but what they are hitting at is now being explored by Unified Field theories that can be found in any theoretical physics textbook.
Consciousness does not arise from physical matter. Physical matter arises out of Universal Consciousness, and we can tap into Universal Consciousness through practices such as meditation and yoga. When you come out of meditation feeling more unified with everything, that is because you are literally existing in a deeper more fundamental dimension of reality.
“I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness. Everything that we talk about, everything that we regard as existing, postulates consciousness.” – Max Planck, Nobel Prize winning originator of quantum theory, as quoted in The Observer (25 January 1931).
2) How our thoughts influence the material world
“We create our reality” is a spiritual term that refers to the fact that we create the reality we experience with our thoughts. This phrase has now become a literal description of the creation of physical reality after recent scientific discoveries. When you think about something, you create a ripple within your field of consciousness, and any emotions those thoughts generate within you create a ripple from the electromagnetic field of your heart.
When large groups of people collectively experience the same thoughts and emotions, it has a scientifically measurable impact on the flow of electrical currents. A study published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Scientific Exploration showed that REGs were found to produce anomalous outputs when deployed in various group environments. Ok, so what does this mean? REGs use computer technology to generate ones and zeros in random sequences. The numbers are printed on a graph. The laws of chance dictate that equal numbers of ones and zeros should be churned out, represented by a nearly flat line on the graph. Any deviation would show as a curve or a spike.
What they found was that enormous spikes were correlated with times of global trauma where panic, anxiety, or excitement was experienced in a large population of people. Whenever massive social and political events took place (such as presidential elections, terrorist attacks, international court cases, etc.), patterns would begin to emerge within the REGs which were specifically designed to never produced patterned sequences.
Another study conducted in part by Dr. R.D. Nelson who is a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University showed that this effect was extremely observable during the twin tower attacks on September 11, 2001. “We attribute this result to a real correlation that should be detectable in future replications. This study suggests the existence of some form of consciousness-related anomaly in random physical systems.” The original study can be found HERE.“High degrees of attention, intellectual cohesiveness, shared emotion, or other coherent qualities of the groups tend to correlate with statistically unusual deviations from theoretical expectation in the FieldREG sequences. If sustained over more extensive experiments, such effects could add credence to the concept of a consciousness “field” as an agency for creating order in random physical processes.”
These studies, and others like them, provide hard scientific evidence that:
- Our thoughts directly affect physical reality
- Our consciousness is not contained within our heads and can influence things outside of the brain
- Our consciousness is connected to all things around us
- That we literally create physical reality to a degree.
3) The soul
The soul has gotten wrapped up in a lot of dogma, liturgy, and ideologies over the ages, but all different philosophies and religions ultimately teach the same thing: There is a non-physical part of us that exists within the body and lives on after the death of the physical body. We have all heard of NDEs right? Is there any scientific explanation for the soul or the experiences people have outside of the physical body?
According to Dr. Stuart Hameroff, a professor at the University of Arizona, a near-death experience happens when the quantum information that inhabits the nervous system leaves the body and dissipates into the universe. Contrary to materialistic accounts of consciousness, Dr. Hameroff offers an alternative explanation of consciousness that can perhaps appeal to both the rational scientific mind and personal intuitions.
Consciousness resides, according to Stuart and British physicist Sir Roger Penrose, in the microtubules of the brain cells, which are the primary sites of quantum processing. Upon death, this information is released from your body, meaning that your consciousness goes with it. They have argued that our experience of consciousness is the result of quantum gravity effects in these microtubules, a theory which they dubbed orchestrated objective reduction (Orch-OR).
Consciousness, or at least proto-consciousness, is theorized by them to be a fundamental property of the universe, present even at the first moment of the universe during the Big Bang. “In one such scheme proto-conscious experience is a basic property of physical reality accessible to a quantum process associated with brain activity.”
He adds: “If they’re not revived, and the patient dies, it’s possible that this quantum information can exist outside the body, perhaps indefinitely, as a soul.”
Here is a conversation between Hameroff and Deepak Chopra:
This account of quantum consciousness explains things like near-death experiences, astral projection, out of body experiences, and even reincarnation (which I consider to be the strongest scientific evidence for the existence of a soul) without needing to appeal to religious ideology. On top of anecdotal evidence, philosophical arguments, and scientific evidence, we now also have a theoretical framework that can accommodate the existence of the soul.
As you can see, the bridge between science and spirituality is very clear. And we are only touching the tip of the iceberg here. I hope this can act as inspiration to you to continue your own independent research, and restore your faith in some spiritual philosophies you may have been doubting. Here are the facts about spirituality as supported by mainstream scientific research. You are on with everything. Your thoughts affect reality. You are a soul within a body. Always remember these things.
Here is one more video by Dr. Amit Gosami, a theoretical physicist who was a professor at the University of Oregon for 30 years, talking about the relationship between spirituality, quantum physics, and consciousness. This is a great watch:
