Principle Raises $17,000 To Buy Shoes For Her Needy Students

Shoes. They’re such a simple necessity, but they can either make or break one’s chances of adequately getting around in this world. The first thing people notice about you, shoes offer a sense of self preservation, security, and also comfort at knowing you can enter any establishment and not be turned away. 
But in Harrison County, Indiana, where 75 percent of students live below the poverty line, not everyone can afford a decent pair of footwear. 

“We've had several students who have had holes in their shoes, the soles were peeling off, we've been using duck tape and staples and tying together shoe strings," said principal Nissa Ellett. 

Inspired to do something about this problem, Nissa Ellet decided to hold a fundraiser and ask the community to provide for its youngsters. She wrote letters to community leaders and parents asking for donations, and was elated when money and notes of support began to pour in from all over the country.

"In 24 days, we raised $17,000," Ellett said. 

Because the amount she hoped to raise was doubled, all 182 elementary children were able to receive not only a pair of shoes, but winter boots with hats and gloves, too.

"My perspective on it is if we can meet their basic needs, then they can focus on learning and that what's critical," Ellett said.
