Rainbow Meanings & Symbolism: Portals, Unity, Transformation
June 5th, 2015
How often do you experience rainbows appearing in your reality? No matter who we are, it always seems that when rainbows appear, they bring a positive and beautiful energy. When a rainbow appears, everyone takes a minute to stop and look up and to appreciate their mystical beauty. So what do they mean?
Throughout man cultures, the natural occurrence of rainbows is seen as a spiritual or mythic symbol of hope, revelation, promises, the light of the future, joyous realization and other positive meanings. For instance, whats-your-sign.com shares, “One of the most intense references to the rainbow is found in Hindu and Buddhist Tantra. Apparently, those who have surpassed their earthly ties are in a position to achieve the highest meditative state, and experience the "rainbow body". This has also been described as a "body of light" when ultimate ascension has been reached. The rainbow body phenomenon is an ultimate oneness, and typically happens at the time of death.”
The rainbow in Chinese culture is often understood as a sky dragon- bridging heaven and earth. In fact, it is understood in many cultures that the rainbow is a symbol of and a sign of the bridge between those two realms. Rainbows are also widely understood as a symbol of transformation, unity, divinity, provision, blessings, spiritual light, divine guidance, inner riches, and more.
Whats-your-sign.com also shares, “Symbolic meaning of rainbows as a celestial bridge is in old Norse traditions too. This bridge was referred to as the Bifrost. This "rainbow bridge" spanned into the world of the gods - it was called the "Tremulous Way" to Asgard. Here we see another connection of the mundane (earthly) element being transported by channel (the rainbow) into a realm of enlightenment (heaven, or realm of the gods).” Clearly the rainbow spans cultures and time as a very important symbolic occurrence from source. Rainbows imply portals, gateways, and openings as well.
Wherever they appear and whichever particular meaning we choose to attach to them, rainbows are universally and intuitively understood as a pure refraction light as it expresses itself through the full spectrum of colors, and therefore a reflection of the unity, wholeness, and balance that we innately carry within. Whenever we see a rainbow, we can understand it as a sight that we are in balance and unity within the self and that hope and blessings are on the horizon.
