Peru’s Ubinas volcano registers large ash emission

Starting this morning, Ubinas volcano began to emit a large amount of ash and generated an eruption column of 1,200 meters, says the Volcanological Observatory of Geophysics, Mining and Metallurgical Institute (Ingemmet). At 9:25 a.m. the volcano released the first emission after a low amplitude movement had been recording for a few hours.
The ash column has so far dispersed in a radius of 10 kilometers around the volcano. The ash is affecting villages of Querapi, Ubinas, Tonohaya, San Miguel, Huatagua, Escacha, Chojata and Sacohaya, in Moquegua. In the period between 2013 to 2015, Ubinas volcano has so far registered more than 200 explosions, reports El Comercio. In April, the Ubinas recorded intense volcanic activity and consequently caused a mudslide. By chance a team of specialists that were studying the crater witnessed the event and captured it on video. –Peru this Week
