A remarkable rainbow-coloured cloud formation has stunned a Costa Rican town on the nation's Independence Day.
Jessie Garner Montealegre told ninemsn she had never seen anything like the phenomenon that lit up the sky above Escazu on Tuesday afternoon.
"The first moment that I saw the cloud appear, it was absolutely breathtaking," she said.
"I have never seen anything like this before. It was absolutely astonishing."
Mrs Montealegre said the street was full of people who were treated to a truly amazing sight as the sky opened up and filled with colour.
"As soon as people saw the cloud... people stopped, pointed, gasped and were awestruck," she said.
"People stopped in their tracks and took it in.
"Many people were taking out their phones and taking pictures."
Costa Rican meteorologist Eladio Solano said the weather phenomenon was called cloud iridescence, the Teletica News reports.
"This optical effect is…formed by droplets and ice particles, the light is refracted and achieves this phenomenon," he said.
The light, water droplets and ice particles mix together to form a rainbow of colours.
Ms Montealegre said the cloud formation may have a scientific name but to her it was a miracle.
"I felt that I was seeing a glimpse of what heaven is like," she said.
Mrs Montealegre and her husband are trying to start an orphanage in Costa Rica as well as an English Institute and have set up a GoFundMe account for donations.
