VITAMIN D PROVEN MORE EFFECTIVE THAN BOTH ANTI-VIRAL DRUGS AND VACCINES AT PREVENTING THE FLU

The weather outside may be frightful, but your health doesn’t have to be a source of stress this holiday season. While we normally consider Flu season to be unavoidable, there’s strong evidence you can skip the flu shot and still remain healthy during the cold winter months; all you need is the “Sunshine Vitamin D.” This nutrient gets its cheerful name because our bodies manufacture it naturally when we absorb sunlight. Vitamin D is more than just a vitamin however, it is also what is known as a “steroid hormone precursor”
According to Dr. Anthony Picatu, there is a direct correlation between the amount of sunlight people receive and the frequency and duration of disease they experience; as you move further from the equator (areas that receive higher amounts of sunlight) the risks of developing disease increases. Vitamin D decreases risks of disease and genetic damage by binding to specific receptors in the body and ultimately rendering many toxins harmless.
Keeping this in mind, it’s really not a stretch to see why the flu is more common during Winter months; people find themselves indoors more often than not, avoiding the cold and snow and by default getting less sunlight and ultimately less vitamin D. Unfortunately, while sunbathing on a beach may be just what the Dr. ordered, not all of us have that option in the cold winter months.
Researchers found those who live further from the equator can mitigate the risks of decreased sunlight by supplementing their vitamin D intake when there isn’t enough sunlight for their bodies to create it naturally. It is important when supplementing vitamin D to use a high-quality vitamin D3 cholecalciferol and avoid supplements with harmful additives and preservatives such as potassium sorbate.
So, while a trip to the Bahamas may be preferable, if that’s not an option you can always supplement your vitamin D intake this winter to stay happy and healthy.

We can see that Vitamin D helps to protect the body from diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s along with promoting healthy bone growth, modulation of cell growth, inflammation reduction and it appears to play a large role when it comes to immunity and fighting infection. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition states that Vitamin D can be several times more effective than anti-viral drugs or vaccines. In a study led by Dr. Mitsuyoshi Urashima it was found that vitamin D reduced children’s chances of influenza infection by 50%, compared to only an 8% reduction when using the antiviral drug Zanamivir.“Steroid hormones help control metabolism, inflammation, immune functions, salt and water balance, development of sexual characteristics, and the ability to withstand illness and injury. The term steroid describes both hormones produced by the body and artificially produced medications that duplicate the action for the naturally occurring steroids.” -Wikipedia
