The Search for Planet 9 Turns to Saturn and Cassini

Somewhere in the far outer reaches of the solar system lurks the mysterious Planet 9 (sometimes called Planet X), the giant planet CalTech professors Mike Brown and Konstantin Batygin claimed to have found evidence of just last month. It’s too far away to see but astronomers would like to know where to look when it finally makes its return close to the inner circle of planets. A new theory suggests that the key to pinpointing this location is currently in the vicinity of Saturn – the Cassini space probe.
What can a nearly 20-year-old spacecraft tell us about the path of a never-seen planet? Quite a bit, it turns out. Astronomers know that planets leave distinct fingerprints of heat energy behind in the path they take while orbiting the Sun. The amounts of energy left by a cold Planet 9 are tiny – tens of degrees above absolute zero making millimeter-length radio waves – but they’re there. If only there were some way to capture and identify those fingerprints.

Fortunately, that’s one of the many functions Cassini has performed as it traveled back and forth through Saturn’s rings. Agnès Fienga of the Nice Observatory in France and her fellow astronomers there have analyzed the data collected so far and, while it hasn’t shown where Planet 9 has traveled, it’s revealed plenty of places where it hasn’t. Already, half of the proposed possible Planet 9 orbital paths have been eliminated.

Will the definitive proof of Planet 9’s existence and route through the solar system be Cassini’s final moment of glory? The probe is scheduled to self-destruct in a plunge into Saturn’s atmosphere on September 15, 2017. This could convince NASA to extend the mission a few more years to 2020 to collect fingerprints for astronomers to analyze.
The process of elimination has helped many of us pass tests (OK, just me). It looks like it could help astronomers ace the test of proving the existence and path of Planet 9.

Saturn Probe Could Help Detect Planet X

The search for a ninth planet is continuing with the help of NASA’s Cassini probe, a spacecraft that has explored the Saturn system for over a decade. If it exists, Planet X, as scientists call it, likely resides somewhere far beyond the orbit of the dwarf planet Pluto.
The existence of the planet was predicted by Mike Brown and his colleague Konstantin Batygin, professors of planetary science at the California Institute of Technology, after observing the unusual orbits of six relatively large bodies in the Kuiper Belt — a loop of icy, rocky bodies that also includes Pluto.
Other scientists, however, suspect the orbits are influenced not by another planet, but by more rocky bodies in the Kuiper Belt that have not yet been detected. If Planet X is real, Brown thinks it will be found within the next five years.
Although Brown and Batygin have yet to name a specific path along which the ninth planet would move through space, they have proposed a possible range in space where it might be found, which is approximately 20 times farther away from the sun than Neptune.
The path of a planet around the sun consists of its distance from it, how oblong its orbit is, and how tilted its orbit is compared to the plane of nearby planets.
“It’s a state-of-the-art calculation and a very clever idea,” said Batygin in an email to Space.com. “It is wonderful to see that members of the community are presenting their own proposals on how to best optimize the observational search for Planet Nine. This is exactly what Mike [Brown] and I hoped for.”
Beginning this year, Cassini will initiate a total of 22 dives into Saturn’s ring system. The probe will enter the gas giant’s atmosphere sometime in September 2017. Meanwhile, the Juno probe is expected to arrive at Jupiter on July 4, 2016.
Brown and Batygin’s new work is available to read on arxiv.org and will be published soon in an upcoming issue of the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Astronomers are tuning into radio signals from Planet Nine aka Planet X, in order to pinpoint the elusive planet once and for all.

Planet Nine, Planet X, or Nibiru, as many others call it is believed to be on a 20,000-year-old orbit around the sun.
It seems that it’s only a matter of time before researchers detect and see the elusive planet nine. Not long ago, American astronomers made ‘shocking’ claims suggesting they believe they have finally discovered the mysterious planet, lurking at the edge of our solar system.

The enigmatic planet, referred to by many as Nibiru, the long lost planet of the Alien Anunnaki, is believed to be p to ten times bigger than Earth, but astronomers are yet to see the planet.
Astrophysicist, however, believe it MUST exist based on new calculations and perturbations in the orbits of other celestial bodies in our solar system. Now, in a new effort to finally pinpoint the elusive planet, stargazers from around the world are working together in order to track down the ‘new’ planet in our solar system.
Regrettably, NASA cannot just point the Hubble Space Telescope out into space in hopes of finding it. Planet X, or Planet Nine is believed to be a ‘super-Earth’ due to its humongous size, but even its alleged size does not help us in our efforts to finding it. The planet which according to researchers must exist is 75 times as far from the Sun as Pluto which means it reflects barely enough light for us to see it in the sky.
This is why, researchers from the McGill University in Montreal, Canada believe the ‘icy planet’ will still retain a small amount of heat from its creations and suggest this heat should be radiated out in the form of millimeter-length radio waves. This enigmatic ‘background’ noise has already been picked up by researchers coming from Neptune and Uranus, and a planet the size of Planet Nine should definitely emit those types of waves too.
Now, a bunch of fancy telescopes have joined the search for planet nine and are searching the skies for these exact wavelengths, which could eventually lead us towards the cosmic hideout of planet nine.
But have we really found Planet Nine? Well, we are waiting for a confirmation
Well, the elusive planet has been ‘found’ several times in the past, and looking back at news reports from different news agencies, you’ll notice that over 30 years ago, planet x was believed to have been found.
The Washington post wrote about it in 1983: “A heavenly body possibly as large as the giant planet Jupiter and possibly so close to Earth that it would be part of this solar system has been found in the direction of the constellation Orion by an orbiting telescope aboard the U.S. infrared astronomical satellite… ‘All I can tell you is that we don’t know what it is,’ said Gerry Neugebauer, chief IRAS scientist.”
In an article published in Newsweek on July 13, 1987, NASA disclosed that there may be a 10th planet orbiting our Sun.  According to NASA research scientist John Anderson, Planet X might actually be out there, but nowhere near our planets. The article from Newsweek states: “if he is right, two of the most intriguing puzzles of space science might be solved: what caused mysterious irregularities in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune during the 19th Century? And what killed off the dinosaurs 26 million years ago.”
On October 23, 1996 an article from AP called “New rebel planet found outside the solar system” states the following: A new planet that breaks all the rules about how and where planets form has been identified in orbit of a twin star about 70 light years from Earth in a constellation commonly known as the Northern Cross. The new planet has a roller coaster like orbit that swoops down close to its central star and then swings far out into frigid fringes, following a strange egg-shaped orbit that is unlike that of any other known planet.

Was it ‘Dark Matter’ or the Sun’s Evil Companion ‘Nemesis’ that Wiped Out the Dinosaurs?

The dinosaur extinction 66m years ago was most likely due to a comet or huge asteroid crashing into Earth, but knowing that asteroids don’t actually impact our planet very often, could this really be the entire story? Many scientists are now wondering whether some sort of cosmological event could have boosted the number of comets at the time, making such a collision more plausible.
In a recent book, American cosmologist Lisa Randall points out that a huge disk of ‘dark matter’ – a type of invisible matter that is five times more common than ‘normal’ matter – could have been the cause. When sweeping past our solar system, such a disk would cause a tiny distress in space, cumulating to a flicker in the gravitational force that can push comets out of the solar system’s Kuiper belt, or the Oort cloud just outside and send them towards the Earth.
But can this theory be trusted? And are there any other cosmological events that could shed light into this matter? Mounting astrophysical and cosmological evidence indicates that there is a lot more dark matter in our galaxy than normal matter. Although it is invisible, we know of its existence because of the gravitational pull that’s affecting objects surrounding it.
Being dark simply means that it does not diffuse or absorb light, which makes it tricky to see. Most cosmologists believe this matter, which is after all part of our galaxies and galaxy clusters, moves slowly, and is ‘cold’ (because hasty particles are hot.)
Randall claims that there’s an entire disk of dark matter in our own galaxy. For it to have an effect on us it would need to be practically aligned with the visible disk of the Milky Way so that the solar system will move back and forth around it as it traverses the galactic center..
To get to the bottom of this, we have to make dark matter weirder than it already is. Randall considers that there is more than one type of dark matter in the form of a ‘contamination’, which she says could consist of 5-10% of the total dark matter. This particular kind of dark matter differs because it can interact with itself just like normal matter does.

While the majority of dark matter can flow through itself without pausing, this special so-called “dissipative” dark matter can cut-off its movement and thereby form a galactic disk, like normal matter does. However, Randall admits in her research papers that there are insecurities regarding this dark matter forming an actual disk.
Randall is a renowned cosmologist, so her hypothesis is certainly credible. Unless the model doesn’t debunk future observations, Randall believes there is a slight possibility in which her scenario would actually result in an increase in comets and asteroids.
So is there any proof of this in the geological or paleontological record? While the issue is still being discussed, there is no conclusive evidence that extinctions have happened cyclically. Randall’s team of researchers believes the boost in comets may happen every 35m years or so, and that it could coincide with the mass extinctions.
So, despite a number of unknown variables, is a dark disk the best cosmological explanation for mass extinctions, or rather the ‘spatial boulder’ which presumably impacted Earth?

Another theory that has been put forward is that the sun has a companion star called Nemesis, a faint red/brown dwarf star orbiting the sun at a distance of approximately 1.5 light years. Every 25m years or so, it makes a step closer to the sun, which could result in enhanced comet activity due to its gravitational pull. This theory is not unlikely, since the majority of stars belong to systems with multiple stars, and judging by the latest discoveries of unknown planetary masses orbiting at the edge of our solar system, as well as the strange ‘Dimming Star’ found relatively close to our planet, Nemesis might prove to be more than a myth after all..
Randall’s scenario is lacking palpable evidence, and although her study offers a more detailed view than what is presented above, the fact that there is no real evidence of periodicity in mass extinctions and crater formation on Earth is a problem. However, the proposal is certainly not impossible and should be taken into account when making observations. Summing up, it reminds us that basic physics and cosmology are fundamental aspects of nature that may even impact the flow of life on Earth.
