Is There a Connection Between Birth-Marks and Past Lives?

Dr. Jim B. Tucker, an associate psychiatry professor at the UVA Medical Center’s Division of Perceptual Studies, has spent the past 15 years investigating claims made by children who remember their past lives. With over 2,500 case files of children ranging between 2-6 years old, Tucker is one of the only scientists in the world who may come close to finding the science behind reincarnation.
The children Tucker has studied are sometimes able to provide exact details about their past lives, and most (if not all) of the time the stories can be traced back to an actual person who died years before – with a median time between the death of that person and the child’s birth at about 16 months. The children who remember generally have above-average IQs and do not have any mental or emotional distress. His book, Return to Life, recalls some of the more fascinating American cases he’s researched and ties these stories to quantum mechanics, which he believes can provide clues to reincarnation’s existence.
Many of the children (one out of five) who reported remembering their past lives claim to recall the “intermission” between death and birth. Claims of what the “intermission” space looks like are varied, as some allege they were in “God’s house,” while others claim they waited near where they died before “going inside” their mother.
An interesting connection between past lives and the children who remember them comes from an unlikely source. In nearly 20% of the children studied, there are scar-like birthmarks or unusual deformities that closely match the marks/injuries from the death of the person whose life the child remembers. Why/how these birthmarks correspond to past-life wounds still puzzles Tucker.
“I didn’t see how a wound on one body could show up as a birthmark on another, even if you accepted the idea of past-life connections,” he wrote in his book “Return to Life: Extraordinary Cases of Children Who Remember Past Lives.”

Dr. Ian Stevenson, author of Reincarnation and BiologyPatrick had three birthmarks that seemed to correspond with wounds his dead brother Kevin had on his body. Kevin had died of cancer as a child before Patrick was born.
During his treatment, Kevin had a bruised and blind left eye. Patrick had a white opacity covering his left eye and he was essentially blind in that eye. Kevin had a tumor over his right ear. Patrick was born with a nodule above his right ear. Kevin had a central IV line inserted on the right side of his neck. Patrick had a mark on the right side of his neck. Furthermore, Kevin walked with a limp, and so did Patrick. Patrick seemed to remember doing things he’d never done, like living in the family’s old apartment, which Kevin had done. He also named a deceased relative, “Billy the Pirate,” who was murdered and whom Patrick’s mother didn’t even know existed. What he said about Billy turned out to be true. Billy supposedly talked to Patrick in his time between lives.

- A boy named Maha Ram in India could remember being killed in a previous life with a shotgun fired at close range. He remembered enough details of his past life for Stevenson to find an autopsy report of the man supposedly reincarnated as Ram. The birthmarks on Ram’s chest corresponded to the bullet wounds.
- A 12-year-old boy in the Middle East born with a ring-like mark or scar around his neck remembered two uncles who beheaded him in order to get his inheritance.
- Karen Kubicko posted photos of herself in high school with a birthmark on her neck and a photo of herself later in life without the birthmark. She said she remembered that in a previous life she was a woman named Helen who was hit by a stray bullet in the neck and died in 1927. The mark was where the bullet had hit her in her vision. After she remembered this, the mark gradually disappeared.
- An Indian boy was born without fingers on his right hand. He remembered his past life where his fingers cut off after sticking them in a fodder chopping machine.
- In another surprising case, a boy was born in Turkey with a malformed right ear. This boy recalled having been shot and killed at close range on that side of his head.
- A graduate student of genetic engineering from UP had a big hematoma birthmark on her lower back and a big mole on the right side of her stomach. During a past life regression, she saw herself as a male rebel leader rousing people to rise in arms against the government in 17th-century Italy. A soldier caught her and she was whacked with a wooden bat on her back. Another soldier shot her on the right side of her stomach.
