The powerful quake struck at 1:15 am (UTC) 44 miles (70.0 km) north-west of Gyamotang village at a depth of six miles.
The quake struck Tibet’s border near Kata Town, the site of two major Buddhist temples.
At least 60 have been injured, six of them seriously. Tremors damaged roads, houses and buildings. Even bridges collapsed in Tibet’s Qamdo City.
Two injured people and rescue efforts have been reported in a nearby village six miles away from the epicenter. Roads leading to Guodong village crumbled during the quake, hampering rescue efforts.
The region of western China in the foothills of the Himalayas is an active earthquake zone, and a 2010 quake in nearby Yushu killed almost 3,000 people.
Nearly 90,000 people were killed in China’s worst quake in recent years, a 7.9 magnitude tremor which struck Sichuan province in May 2008.
