The people who working at CERN are scared because they are working with unfamiliar technology that they won't get that many chances to try out. If the machine doesn't work the first time, they are dead.
The plan is to put the earth in an alternate timeline when the dwarf star Nemesis passes within 9 million miles of it.
They have only the assurance of the people who originally developed this technology that it will work and these people aren't human. This technology has never been used on a whole planet before.
