It’s one of the most controversial construction projects in the United States today: A snaking system of tubes and pipes designed to shunt oil from North Dakota across four states without relying on rail or roads.
But while the Dakota Access Pipeline has been called a “major step” toward American energy independence by its advocates, others paint a decidedly less enthusiastic picture. The nearly 1,200 mile pipeline slithers right alongside Native American reservations and sacred tribal lands, and activists and environmentalists say it represents a profound threat to the wellbeing of indigenous communities.
For months, protests against the pipeline have grown along the construction site, resulting in a number of confrontations with local law enforcement. Efforts to halt construction through the court system have moved ahead, with a ruling expected by September 9. With chants of “You can’t drink oil! Keep it in the soil!” the protesters, many of whom belong to a number of different Native tribes, have come from around the country. Many are young, engaged and eager to embrace their indigenous identity.
Fusion went to North Dakota and spoke with several of these activists, who shared their thoughts on the fight to preserve the land for themselves, and future generations. Here are just a few of them.
*****

Samuel Evering, 15
Standing Rock Sioux Tribe
Cannon Ball, North Dakota
“It’s the worst thing that can actually go through here,” Evering said. “It’ll just ruin everything around the reservation. This whole entire water that we have is just going to be ruined.”
Evering added, “Native Americans are still standing strong. They’ll always be strong.”
UPDATES: Native American activists fighting a North Dakota oil pipeline Pic-1Fusion
Naelyn Pike, 17
Chiricahua Apache
San Carlos Indian Reservation, Arizona
For Pike, the protests are “a time of unification. It’s to be with my brothers and sisters and my youth to stand as one and fight for this land.”

Pike said the potential threat posed by the pipeline is not simply against her generation, but against generations to come. “At any time that pipeline can break, and that will contaminate our water,” she explained. “And if it contaminates our water, what water will our children be able to drink? What water will we be able to drink?”
She also had a message for President Obama.
“To President Obama, if you are listening, our people are in need of our lands to be protected,” she said. “You say you are the president and you listen to all voices. Well, this is us telling you listen to our voice, listen to our cries. Because our indigenous people are suffering to protect the land that you are living on.”
Despite the challenges, though, Pike remained hopeful, explaining that “to see all of the obstacles that we go through, and to be able to live and be proud of who we are, and know the songs and our language, and know the prayers, I know that we are not a lost people yet.”

Anthony Red House, 18
Dine Tribe
Shiprock, New Mexico
Red House said the protests against the pipeline are unifying event with a sacred purpose. “This event has brought many tribes together from all over the nation just to fight for water,” he said. “Because water is the resource to everything.”
“Being able to fight for our land is something sacred,” he added later. “It reminds us on who we are on the inside. Where we come from. Or who we come from.”

North Dakota Governor Declares STATE OF EMERGENCY — Calls On Cops To Squash Native American Protests To Save State Money

Posted on August 28, 2016 by https://dublinsmick.wordpress.com/

Source: Counter Current News

UPDATES: Native American activists fighting a North Dakota oil pipeline Native-pipeline2
The price tag for the cost of police to fight the protesters is small in comparison to the cost of cleaning up an oil spill.
With the steady stream of protesters pouring into the area around the Dakota Access pipeline demonstration near the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, state and county officials are asking North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple for financial assistance.
Native News Online reports that Governor Dalrmple issued an emergency declaration for southwest and south central North Dakota.
The GROWING crowd of protesters come and go as they are able, but estimates range from 1500-4000 total protesters at this time.
People from as far away as California have come to show they support what is best for the people and they DO NOT support the Dakota Access pipeline.

GREG WIZA, NORTH DAKOTA’S DIRECTOR OF THE HOMELAND SECURITY DIVISION OF THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY SERVICES HAS PUT A PRICE TAG BETWEEN $750,000 TO $1,000,000 FOR THE EXTRA POLICE FORCE, BARRICADES AND PORTABLE TOILETS. HE SAID THE FIGURE COULD TOP $1,000,000 IF THE DEMONSTRATIONS CONTINUE BEYOND A FEW WEEKS.

Native News Online also states, “The governor’s declaration allows local county and state officials to seek extra funding that is required to operate their “security” measures of overseeing the demonstrations that have been peaceful in nature since they began on Thursday, August 11, 2016.”
Even though there were false accusations by police about pipe bombs (With protesters referring to pipes which are used to smoke herbs), Dakota Access security officials stated they have no evidence that any weapons, such as guns or pipe bombs have been part of the demonstrations.
Native News Online also reports that “The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe had its day in court at the E. Barrett Prettyman Federal Courthouse in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, August 24, 2016, and now has to wait for at least two weeks for a ruling from U.S. District Judge James E. Boarsberge.”
Even an extra million dollars spent by tax payers now will be just a drop of water in the river compared to what people will have to pay after an oil spill. The protests are expected to continue at least until the ruling comes forth.

Chief Likhts’amisyu Says No Oil Pipelines On Wet’suwet’en Territory

Catastrophic Environmental Events And The Sense Of Urgency (Tar Sands Oil In Lake Michigan And That Is Only The Beginning)

Posted on March 27, 2014 by https://dublinsmick.wordpress.com/
UPDATES: Native American activists fighting a North Dakota oil pipeline Polluted-riverApologies, as of right now I am having trouble leaving a live link many times. I do not know if this is temporary or a permanent situation.
There is a lot of news and opinion on the internet these days about how to rouse the American people and others around the world to somehow take notice of their situation and demand solutions to some of the immense problems we all face. You cannot arouse a people who have been poisoned I am afraid. It is much to late when that point arrives. I have noticed that countries like France as well as Brazil are now set to ban the poisonous GMO corn introduced by Monsanto. Americans seem willing to continue consuming this monstrosity. Below I have enumerated on just a few problems, mankind faces as a whole. Some of this seems to have given rise to a certain stirring among nations and a drive for independence.
Some of us have noticed that BP after poisoning the Gulf of Mexico and a large amount of America’s seafood has been given the right operate once again. The consequences of which have now resulted in a tar sands oil spill in the Great Lakes. The Lake Michigan Whiting refinery has spilled oil into the Lake due to a “glitch”. Just how many more glitches are we supposed to survive? The beach near Chicago is now said to have a contaminated area of some 2700 feet. Officials say there are no reports of damage to wild life or ill effects. (We are always so lucky aren’t we?) More tar sand oil is being shipped down from Canada, a country that so far is reporting less cancer frequency than the United States.
http://voiceofrussia.com/2014_03_26/BPs-refinery-spills-oil-into-Lake-Michigan-priceless-ecosystem-in-danger-1831/
This is not the first time in Lake Michigan either.
https://dublinsmick.wordpress.com/2013/08/02/chief-likhtsamisyu-says-no-oil-pipelines-on-wetsuweten-territory/
Horror stories abound which have been craftily covered over by the six corporations which own the media. The leak into the Kalamazoo River sometime back was given little play and it certainly also was related to tar sand oil. the Kalamazoo River flows into Lake Michigan. It makes little sense to further pollute such a large body of water with talk of future water shortages emerging, unless, …. unless the people around these areas are going to be considered expendable. Perhaps it is all related to Agenda 21.
For anyone who thought the Gulf oil spill was over and done with, I have bad news. Submerged oil mats are now floating up to the beaches near Pensacola, Florida. This oil is still seeping from cracks in the thin mantle of the Gulf and has not been sealed as we were lead to believe. Some suggest however much of it could have dissolved by natural bacteria without the use of deadly corexit which simply made it disappear under the surface. This chemical is not allowed to be used in Europe, but is fine for the United States. In fact you do not even want to discuss anything of substance with sports fans, they will classify almost anything as a conspiracy due to their limited vision. You will find them much more worried over who is recruited to fill a spot on their favorite sports team than the survival of the planet itself. This is the time we find ourselves in. It is sometimes referred to as thus:
Sometime around 23 hundred years ago we see in the Mahabharata Ydhishthira has a vision of the age to come: I see the coming of another age, where barbaric kings rule over a vicious, broken world, where puny, fearful men live tiny lives, white hair at sixteen, copulating with animals, their women perfect whores, making love with greedy mouths. The cows dry, trees stunted, no more flowers, no more purity, ambition, corruption, the age of Kali, the black time.”

VANTAGE — A massive crack in a major Columbia River dam poses enough of a risk of dam failure that Grant County authorities have activated an emergency-response plan. But utility managers are lowering water levels a total of 20 feet because they fear the structure otherwise could endanger inspectors trying to get a better handle on how seriously the dam is damaged.

The 65 foot crack in the dam is a serious problems as down below this area lies the Hanford Nuclear project which is very large and some are indicating it also is on the verge of collapse.

Wednesday occurred in yet another location at the Hanford site […] Sources tell the reporter 17 people were working on the video inspection when three were suddenly sickened by the release of vapors.
This area is home to Mount St. Helens a volcano which erupted some years ago. There is a saying among the Bear tribe that when sister speaks, (Mount St. Helens) Big Brother soon answers. That would be Mount Rainier one of the largest strato-volcanos in the world. This area is home to many volcanos, such as Mount Baker, Mount Hood and others. Good night and good luck. It seems weekly now we hear of increased activity around the Yellowstone super volcano. If this one goes the situations listed here will be seen as minor as the United States would be looking at catastrophic consequences. Talk of getting control of the money and foreign policy would become moot issues. The same might be said of the New Madrid fault, which by the way is said to go about every 200 years and is way over due. There was also a recent 4.4 earthquake under Los Angeles. Something slightly larger would simply mean a tragedy of epic proportions we could only speculate about.

“A Slow Genocide of the People”: Uranium Mining Leaves Toxic Nuclear Legacy on Indigenous Land”
The iconic Grand Canyon is the site of a battle over toxic uranium mining. Last year, a company called Energy Fuels Resources was given federal approval to reopen a mine six miles from the Grand Canyon’s popular South Rim entrance. A coalition of Native and environmental groups have protested the decision, saying uranium mining could strain scarce water sources and pose serious health effects. Diné (Navajo) tribal lands are littered with abandoned uranium mines. From 1944 to 1986, 3.9 million tons of uranium ore were chiseled and blasted from the mountains and plains of the region. More than 1,000 mines have closed, but the mining companies never properly disposed of their radioactive waste piles, leading to a spike in cancer rates and other health ailments. Broadcasting from Flagstaff, Arizona, we speak with Taylor McKinnon, director of energy with Grand Canyon Trust, and Klee Benally, a Diné (Navajo) activist and musician. “It’s really a slow genocide of the people, not just indigenous people of this region, but it’s estimated that there are over 10 million people who are residing within 50 miles of abandoned uranium mines,” Benally says. Benally also describes the struggle to preserve the San Francisco Peaks, an area considered sacred by 13 Native tribes, where the Snowbowl ski resort is using treated sewage water to make snow.

We are seeing various stirrings around the world where various segments are seeking realignment. Most of us know about the Crimea. Venice however has recently voted to break away from Italy. A small island known as Spruce Island is seeking a return to Russia under legal request as it was given to the Russian orthodox church many years ago and contains a monastery and about 250 people. It is said to be 47 kilometers wide. Some reports indicate that 18000 signatures have been collected in Alaska to join the Russian customs union also. There are also stirrings that parts of Moldova are seeking the same as well as the Eastern sections of the Ukraine. There is lots of uncertainty out there. A reported 16,000 Ukrainian soldiers out of 18,000 have now switched over to the Russian side as well as the Crimean Dolphins who are trained to patrol the Black Sea for underwater attacks.UPDATES: Native American activists fighting a North Dakota oil pipeline 1f642

Mayor Aysen Nikolayev and other officials from Russia’s Far Eastern Federal District have petitioned President Vladimir Putin, the heads of both chambers of the Russian Parliament, and the Russian Foreign Minister requesting the return of Spruce Island to the church.
Researchers from Yakutsk went to the Alaskan capital Juneau to study the archive belonging to the Russian bibliographer Mikhail Vinokurov who emigrated to the USA in 1917 after the Bolshevik revolution. They discovered a certificate issued by Russian government commissioner Captain Second Rank Aleksey Peshchurov, detailing the transfer of Russian territories in Alaska to the United States. According to this document, Spruce Island has been granted to the Russian Orthodox Church ‘for eternity’.

The pope meets with Obama and from most pictures we see both are smiling like a mule eating briars and two executives working for the same company. They are to discuss immigration among other things but that is a mute issue in America as nobody can now be deported under new guidelines. The program seems to be replace existing Americans for others more suitable to the global shakers. I assume this will include native americans also. No word on whether or not Obama bowed to show obeisance or slid in on his chest baseball style.

Police Say Tasering 8-Year-Old Native American Girl Was Justified

Posted on August 29, 2016 by https://dublinsmick.wordpress.com/

Looks like a real desperado eh. Some of these cops need to be in a new kind of work.
UPDATES: Native American activists fighting a North Dakota oil pipeline 8-year-old_rosebud_sioux_girl_tazed_by_police-courtesy_family1
The mother of an 8-year-old Native American girl is suing police who maintain that they were justified in using a taser on the child. The family lives in Pierre, South Dakota and belong to the Rosebud Sioux community.
Four police officers decided that this young girl who had a small paring knife was “a danger to herself,” requiring them to taser her.
But her mother says that the officers should have used non-violent means to neutralize the threat they believed the 70-pound girl posed.
It all happened back in October of 2013, but since then family members have obtained attorneys Dana Hanna and Patrick Duffy and their tribe has released public statements against the incident of irrational police brutality.
“Within seconds,” the officer’s electroshock weapon discharged snares into the chest of the 70-pound girl, the lawsuit reads.
“The force of the electricity shot through her body, lifted her, and threw her against a wall. After the officers had stunned (the girl) into high voltage submission, they pulled the fish-hook like Taser darts from her chest, gave her emergency medical attention, bandaged the holes left by the razor-sharp hooks, and called the ambulance.”
Pierre Police Chief Bob Granpre, however, says that the police acted properly, and a two-month long investigate claims the same thing (PDF).
Attorney Dana Hanna recounts the incident, saying that the “four trained police officers surrounding a 70-pound, 8-year-old Indian girl,” should have used tactics that were less violent and not so risky to the young girl’s health and possibly life.
“One distracts her, another grabs the girl’s arm. That’s what they should have done,” Hanna continued.
?
“She had a kitchen paring knife, but hadn’t cut. She was a kid throwing a tantrum. They should have made an attempt to grab the kid, not use a weapon to throw her into a wall. A Taser’s not meant to kill, but it does kill. Many people have died after being hit by a Taser by cops. It never should be used on a little child. She certainly wasn’t presenting a danger to officers.”
The girl’s father, Bobby Jones added, “I don’t fault for the police being there because they were called. They were there. But what happened while they were there is why I’m upset,” in an early interview he did with local KSFY.
Hanna says that the girl, “L.M.J.”, is currently receiving mental and emotional counseling from a child counselor, as a result of the trauma she experienced at the hands of police. We’ll keep you updated on how the lawsuit proceeds.
