BREAKING: Convicted mass murderer Charles Manson dies aged 83
Infamous serial killer Charles Manson has died after a brief hospitalization, authorities say. He died Thursday in a hospital in Bakersfield, California.
A spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation confirmed news of Manson’s passing, assuring the press her outfit will very soon put out an official statement on his passing.
The head of the Manson Family was found guilty in 1971 of orchestrating the murders of seven people, including actress Sharon Tate. He was reported to have sought to start a ‘race war’, which he dubbed ‘Helter Skelter’ after The Beatles’ song of the same name.
Manson was sentenced to death, a sentence which was later amended to life imprisonment in Corcoran State Prison after California discontinued the death penalty.
Ohio-born Manson formed a cult known as the “Manson Family” around himself in the late ’60s. Manson assembled a group of runaways and outcasts known as the Manson Family. In the summer of 1969, he directed his mostly young, female followers to murder seven people in what prosecutors said was part of a plan to incite a race war.
Among the victims was the actor Sharon Tate, the pregnant wife of the film-maker Roman Polanski. She was stabbed 16 times by cult members.
Manson and his followers Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, Leslie Van Houten and Charles “Tex” Watson were convicted of murder and sentenced to death.
All avoided execution when a US Supreme Court ruling temporarily banned the death penalty in 1972.
Before the murders he also spent time as a singer-songwriter on the LA music scene. Several recordings of his music have been released over the years to capitalize on his notoriety – most recently, it was revealed that some of Manson’s prison recordings were set for another release.
