There is also a new moon tonight. At its new phase, the moon is travelling between Earth and the sun. Since sunlight can only reach the far side of the moon, and the moon is in the same region of the sky as the sun, the moon will be completely hidden from view. Jupiter and the Moon Low in the southwestern sky for a short period after sunset on Thursday, October 11, the young crescent moon will sit 3 degrees to the lower right of the very bright planet Jupiter.
