A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the north of Chile at 22:19 GMT on Thursday, November 1, 2018, just 118 kilometers (73 miles) to the northeast of the coastal city of Iquique and at a depth of 91 kilometers. The tremors provoked the mass exodus of people from Iquique beaches. No tsunami warning was issued.

The strong jolt has been felt over large areas from Arica, Parinacota, Tarapacá to Antofagasta, causing landslides and shaking buildings in the area.
