Two strong explosions took place at Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano over the past 24 hours. Authorities urge residents and tourists not to approach the volcano, especially the crater.
The explosions were registered at 22:44 LT, December 7 (04:44 UTC, December 8) and the other at 23:22 LT (05:22 UTC, December 8). They were accompanied by columns of ash of 1.5 km (4 900 feet) and 2 km (6 561 feet), respectively.
The eruption threw incandescent fragments more than 2 km (1.2 miles) from the crater.
"The direction of the winds is northeast and residents can expect ash fall in populations of that sector," CENAPRED said 06:15 UTC, December 8.
