Giant squid filmed in the Gulf of Mexico

Scientists have captured footage of a huge cephalopod emerging from the gloom 750m below the surface.
One of the largest and most elusive denizens of the deep, the giant squid, which can grow up to a whopping 43ft long, is usually only seen when dead specimens wash up on beaches.
This one however - the first ever to be spotted off the coast of the United States - was filmed very much alive thanks to a special camera capable of withstanding the intense pressures of the deep.
The footage, which can be viewed below, shows the squid emerging from the darkness, examining the lure with its tentacles and then disappearing again a few seconds later.
The video was shot at a depth of 750 meters approximately 160 kilometers from New Orleans as part of a project funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Ocean Exploration and Research.
