Key government officials have agreed on the importance of declassifying space-based US military projects.
Back in June 2018, the US President announced the formation of a new branch of the US military - a 'space force' that will help to prevent countries such as China and Russia taking the lead off-world.
But what about the secretive space programs that the US has decided not to divulge to the public ?
During a panel at the Reagan National Defense Forum earlier this month, Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett argued in favor of the need to declassify information about such projects.
"Declassifying some of what is currently held in secure vaults would be a good idea," she said.
"You would have to be careful about what we declassify, but there is much more classified than what needs to be."
Another panelist - Rep. Mike Rogers - had the same idea. He recently met with Barrett to discuss the issue and described information on such programs as "overwhelmingly classified."
"As members of the Armed Services Committee and the defense appropriators, we get it," he said. "But we have to have our other colleagues in the Congress to be supportive of us making the changes we need and the resources we need into this."
"It's not going to happen until they understand the threat and the dependence we have. And I don't think that can happen until we see significant declassification of what we're doing in space and what China and Russia are doing, and how space is in their day-to-day lives."
It remains unclear when (or even if) such declassifications are likely to take place, however Barrett hinted that progress on the matter could be made as early as next year.
All we know for sure is that there is a great deal that the US government is choosing to keep secret.
