Sun Shoots Out A Coronal Mass Ejection

Yesterday, Jan. 19th, space satellites glimpsed an explosion from a source hidden just behind the Sun's eastern limb. The blast hurled a brilliant coronal mass ejection (CME) into space and sparked a minor B1-class solar flare. The plasma cloud is likely not heading for Earth. Explosions like this can happen at any time, even during Solar Minimum when magnetic fields in the sun's atmosphere occasionally become unstable and reorganize themselves. No sunspots are required. The sun has been without spots for 9 straight days and altogether 12 days so far in 2020. Solar Minimum could last for years. That was one of the predictions issued on December 2019 by an international panel of experts. If the panel is correct, already-low sunspot counts will reach nadir sometime between January and November 2020, followed by a slow recovery toward a new Solar Maximum in 2023-2026.
