The scientific term for this occurrence is called an occultation, and it happens when a crescent Moon is positioned directly between Venus and the Earth, ABS-CBN News reports. Due to the precise and intricate placement of the two planets, people in certain parts of the world will be able to see a happy smiley face, whereas people in other parts will see the same thing, but upside down.
As the outlet goes on to explain, it is said to happen due to the moon's orbit around the Earth, and the Earth's orbit around the Sun. Depending on what latitude you view this occurrence from, you will see the moon in the shape of a ‘U’ (lit on the bottom) rather than a backward ‘C’ (lit on the side). So the place where you are watching has everything to do with whether you will catch a glimpse or not. But regardless of that, the explanation is pretty much the same either way.
