The annual event celebrates all things UFO related and reminds enthusiasts worldwide to 'watch the skies'.
Intended to help raise awareness of "the undoubted existence of UFOs", World UFO Day is a special event for UFO enthusiasts and researchers as well as for disclosure advocates who are attempting to encourage world governments to reveal what they know about UFOs.
The day also commemorates the best known UFO case of them all - that of the object which crashed on a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico and was later covered up by the military.
UFO Day is also a time to look back over the last twelve months of UFO related news and revelations, of which there have certainly been quite a few.
Perhaps the most significant recent development was the official declassification and release by the US Department of Defense of three video clips of unidentified objects recorded by US Navy pilots.
Eight hazard reports providing additional details of the encounters were also made public the following month thanks to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Naval Safety Center.
Such an official acknowledgement that these were genuinely "unexplained" objects adds credence to the idea that the US government does not have all the answers and that something very unusual has been encroaching into US airspace.
"I'm glad the Pentagon is finally releasing this footage, but it only scratches the surface of research and materials available," wrote former Nevada Senator Harry Reid.
"The US needs to take a serious, scientific look at this and any potential national security implications. The American people deserve to be informed."
Reid, who has often spoken out about the UFO phenomenon, is certainly no stranger to advocating for the subject to be taken a lot more seriously than it previously has been.
"I personally don't know if there exists little green men other places, I kind of doubt that, but I do believe that the information we have indicates we should do a lot more study," he said previously.
"We have hundreds and hundreds of people that have seen the same thing - something in the sky."
