LONDON, England: After thousands of dead sea creatures were found on beaches in North East England, British environmental authorities have launched an investigation.
On Monday, Marske-by-the-Sea resident Sharon Bell told CNN she went to the beach and was shocked to see “the seaweed was piled high to waist level, but it was absolutely full, and I mean thousands of dead crabs and alive crabs, all varieties, lobsters as well.”
In a statement to CNN, the UK’s Environment Agency said it was working with the Centre for Environment, Fisheries, and Aquaculture and North Eastern Inshore Fisheries Conservation Authority to investigate the deaths of thousands of crabs that have washed up along England’s Northeast shore.
“Samples of water, sediment, mussels, and crabs have been collected and sent for analysis to consider whether a pollution incident could have contributed to the deaths of the animals,” an agency spokesperson told CNN.
What is happening along the coast is “deeply worrying,” tweeted Jacob Young, MP for Redcar, on Sunday.
“If it is a man-made incident and we have actually done it, then obviously we need to make sure it is not going to happen again,” Bell added, expressing her hope that local people would receive answers about why the sea creatures died.
