Jet suit paramedics are ready for take-off in the Lake District

Jet suits capable of speeds of up to 85mph could help paramedics reach accident victims in remote areas much faster.
Reaching injured hikers in the Peak District and other remote areas of the British Isles can prove challenging at the best of times, with ambulance crews often having to cover significant distances over challenging terrain to reach someone in need of immediate medical assistance.
Now thanks to inventor Richard Browning, however, paramedics are preparing to embark for the first time this summer using flying jet suits to cover large swathes of awkward terrain within minutes.
The scheme kicked off a couple of years ago with members of the Great North Air Ambulance (GNAA) training how to use the jet suits safely and effectively.
Since then, one has completed their training and another two will be ready very soon.
As an example of their effectiveness, in the case of one particular fell that would normally take 30 minutes to reach, the jet suits would make it possible to get there in a mere 90 seconds.
Such a speed could mean all the difference if someone was in a life or death scenario.
"We're still awestruck by it, everyone looks at the wow factor and the fact we are the world's first jet suit paramedics but for us it's about delivering patient care," said GNAA operations director Andy Mawson.
"When I started as a paramedic I never thought I'd be working with a helicopter, never mind this."
