PhD astrophysicist recounts UFO sighting

Ethan Siegel encountered something one night in New Mexico that would leave him perplexed for almost two decades.
It can be easy to dismiss a lot of UFO sightings as stars, aircraft, flares, drones and other mundane things, but when the person reporting the sighting is a pilot, policeman, military serviceman or scientist, we tend to take more notice of both what they saw and what they thought it was.
In a recent article for Big Think, PhD astrophysicist Ethan Siegel described a UFO sighting that he has attempted to make sense of for years, but which continues to remain a complete mystery.
It happened back in December 2006 while he and a friend were returning from a visit to Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico.
They had been driving through remote desert at dusk when Siegel spotted a "glowing, blue, ellipse-shaped light" which started off stationary in the sky before slowly starting to move.
"As it got closer, it brightened but never appeared to be anything other than a solid blue disk, and it seemed to pick up speed at an alarming rate," he wrote.
"It then sped off to the right, faster and farther away from us, and after about two or three seconds of moving at what was its top speed, the light simply went out."
What's interesting about the sighting is how Siegel went about deconstructing what he saw while attempting to rule out various conventional explanations based on his own experiences.
He ultimately concluded that he was unable to find a definitive answer - instead coming up with what he deemed to be a number of unlikely possibilities, including that of it being alien in origin.
That said, he also admits that the highest likelihood is that it was something mundane.
"When you can't explain what you yourself have seen, it's easy to let your imagination run wild," he wrote.
