New Zealand stargazers were left puzzled and awed by strange, spiralling light formations in the night sky on Sunday night.
Around 7.25pm Alasdair Burns, a stargazing guide on Stewart Island/Rakiura, received a text from a friend: go outside and look at the sky. “As soon as we actually went outside, it was very obvious what it was he was referring to,” Burns said.
He saw a huge, blue spiral of light amid the darkness. “It looked like an enormous spiral galaxy, just hanging there in the sky, and slowly just drifting across,” Burns said. “Quite an eerie feeling.”
Burns snapped a few images of the lights on long exposure, capturing the spiral from his phone. “We quickly banged on the doors of all our neighbours to get them out as well. And so there were about five of us, all out on our shared veranda looking up and just kind of, well, freaking out just a little bit.”
The country’s stargazing and amateur astronomy social media groups lit up with people posting photographs and questions about the phenomenon, which was visible from most of the South Island. Theories abounded – from UFOs to foreign rockets to commercial light displays.
“Premonition from our orbital black hole,” said one stargazer. “Aliens at it again,” commented another.
The reality was likely a little more prosaic, said Prof Richard Easther, a physicist at Auckland University, who called the phenomenon “weird but easily explained”.
Clouds of that nature sometimes occurred when a rocket carried a satellite into orbit, he said.

“When the propellant is ejected out the back, you have what’s essentially water and carbon dioxide – that briefly forms a cloud in space that’s illuminated by the sun,” Easther said. “The geometry of the satellite’s orbit and also the way that we’re sitting relative to the sun – that combination of things was just right to produce these completely wacky looking clouds that were visible from the South Island.”
Easther said the rocket in question was likely the Globalstar launch from SpaceX, which the company sent into low-earth orbit off Cape Canaveral in Florida on Sunday.
Burns had guessed the spiral was likely a rocket, having read about a similar phenomenon in 2009, when a Russian missile launch caused huge blue spirals over Norway. Even knowing the likely source, he said, it was a confronting sight. “None of us had ever seen anything like that before. It was spectacular.”

Some very strange signs in the sky...

Your daily dose of natural disasters and amazing phenomena for June 20, 2022...

Strange Sounds

Strange things in the sky… On Sunday morning, June 19th, SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral (0427 UT). Within hours, people around the world started seeing strange things in the sky.
First there was a "smoke ring." Jerrod Wood video-recorded it from central Illinois:

Almost two hours after launch, the upper stage of the Falcon 9 deployed the Globalstar communications satellite; the smoke ring Wood saw was the "puff" of separation. Because it happened so far above Earth, more than 700 miles high, people saw the event across much of North America from Arizona to Missouri and beyond.
An hour after the smoke ring, things got really strange. People in New Zealand saw this:

"It looked like a beautiful galaxy appeared in the sky," says Alasdair Burns of Twinkle Dark Sky Tours. "It was a very slowly rotating spiral that started small and gradually expanded. Eventually it became so large and faint that it could no longer be seen. There were a group of us on our balcony watching it and none of us had ever seen anything like it."
This spiral was almost certainly the tumbling upper stage of the Falcon 9 rocket executing a fuel dump. Similar spirals have been seen after previous Falcon 9 launches. This is an exceptionally clear photo of the phenomenon.
Finally, David Cortner of Rutherford College, North Carolina, saw something truly puzzling. He calls it "rocket powered aurora." This 8-frame mosaic shows a red band that appeared shortly after the launch:

"I went out to watch the midnight launch of the Falcon 9," says Cortner. "Here in western North Carolina, I was hoping for a faint, moonlit 'jellyfish.' The rocket's trajectory was much higher than I expected, however; it was almost 500 km high by the time it was due east of me, not 150-200 km as are most SpaceX flights up the Atlantic coast. As a result the rocket passed by me unseen."
"A minute or two after the rocket's closest approach (by the clock), I noticed this red glow spreading across a broad swath of the eastern sky." There was no space weather event in progress. Cortner speculates that the rocket itself somehow stimulated oxygen atoms ~500 km high to produce an artificial aurora. For reference, natural red auroras range in altitude typically from 150 km to 250 km, and more rarely all the way up to 600 km.
We do not know what produced this glow. Please share your good ideas.

Strange phenomenon appears in the skies over US and New Zealand

There has been much discussion on the web about a covert payload hitchhiking on this Falcon 9 rocket. Analysts believe that a clandestine satellite may have been released about 10.5 minutes after launch.
