Principal Kandi Darnell was with Sanchez shortly before he suffered the heart attack.
“He seemed fine and everything seemed fine,” remarked Darnell, whom the report said had known Sanchez since he was a student. She added he shined as a teacher.
“He was a kid’s teacher,” Darnell declared. “I’ll put it that way. He took time out to connect with the kids.
The principal issued a longer statement on the school’s Facebook page.
“We lost a friend, colleague, and just a good man today. Jacob was the kind of person who would do anything to help out others,” she said in the statement. “He was a kids’ teacher. He worked hard to connect with all of our kids not just our athletes.”
A colleague of Sanchez created a commemorative T-shirt for students and parents with the front caption, “Live Like Coach Sanchez.”

A quote attributed to the former coach and teacher appeared on the back:
“I’ve never wanted a student to dread coming to my class. I make sure to tell them I want to see them every day. I tell my kids I truly do care for them and that they become honorary “Sanchez” when they get taught by me.

Devine, Texas, is a small city in Bexar (pronounced “Bear”) County with a population of fewer than 5,000, according to the 2010 census. It is located about 25 miles from San Antonio. The middle school instructs 464 students, according to a Texas Tribune report.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office reports he died of a heart attack. On Friday, the Devine community gathered for a vigil before the start of school and school counselors were available to help students cope.
Sanchez’s January 5 death, which occurred at 1:40 p.m., resulted from a heart attack, according to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office.
“My honey was the light of our lives,” his wife, Rebecca Powe said. “He kept our family on our toes, constantly going, and always laughing. We shared a beautiful life together He loved us with his whole heart and loved his life. He was dedicated to the community of Devine and the kids were his motivation every day.”
