by Tyler Durden

Monday, Feb 06, 2023

Update (1506ET):
The death toll across Turkey and Syria has surpassed 3,000 people and could spark a humanitarian crisis in that area of the world, according to NYTimes.
About 10,000 rescuers had been dispersed across southeast Turkey by late Monday. The Turkish health minister said as many as 3,000 buildings have collapsed.

CNN reported the total number injured in Turkey and Syria has climbed to 13,600. That number will likely rise.
NYT detailed on a map where all the large quakes struck earlier.

Okan Tuysuz, a professor of geology at Istanbul Technical University, told Bloomberg that the quake was the "strongest earthquake in Turkey since 1939." He said one of the world's most active seismic zones runs through the country.
The devastation is so bad that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the European Union, and 45 countries offer assistance to Turkey.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on state television that nearly 3,000 buildings were destroyed.
"We hope that we will overcome this disaster together as soon as possible," Erdogan said.
So far, reports in the southern part of the country show the port of Iskenderun was damaged. Cracks were found in airport runways in that part of the country.
Turkish state-run pipeline operator Botas said no leaks were detected in crude oil pipelines in Turkey's south. These critical pipelines connect Turkey with vast oil fields in Iraq and Azerbaijan.
In financial markets, Turkish stocks plunged. The country's stock exchange banned short selling. Here's a Bloomberg market update:
The Borsa Istanbul 100 Index dropped as much as 4.6% in morning trading, with state-run insurance company Turkiye Sigorta AS and fertilizer producer Gubre Fabrikalari TAS leading declines. The lira held steady. Turkish stock exchange Borsa Istanbul suspended short selling on the country's stocks on Monday for an indefinite time, while imposing a depository rule for selling shares as part of its efforts to limit a wider market fallout. Borsa Istanbul has also halted trading in eight companies until they make a statement on how their operations were affected by the earthquake.
As rescue efforts are underway, the United States Geological Survey warned the powerful quake could result in as many as 10,000 deaths.

An ancient castle dating back to the Roman and Byzantine empires was destroyed in Turkey following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked the country and neighboring Syria in the early hours of Monday morning.
Gaziantep Castle, built initially as a watchtower between the second and fourth centuries AD under the Romans, collapsed in the earthquake that saw roughly 2,824 other buildings destroyed, CBS News reported.

The castle, a historic site and tourist attraction for the area, was transformed from watchtower to castle in the fifth century AD by Byzantine Emperor Justinianus, also called the “Architect of Castles,” CBS reported. The castle was improved and repaired by the Ottomans while they reigned over the region, with two of its 12 towers and its main gate being completely rebuilt in 1557 by Suleiman the Magnificent, the outlet reported.

“Some of the bastions in the east, south and southeast parts of the historical Gaziantep Castle in the central Şahinbey district were destroyed by the earthquake, the debris was scattered on the road,” Turkish state-run outlet Anadolu reported, according to CNN. “The iron railings around the castle were scattered on the surrounding sidewalks. The retaining wall next to the castle also collapsed. In some bastions, large cracks were observed.”
Gaziantep was one of the areas hit hardest by Monday’s quake. The city of over two million people was already struggling to maintain public resources in the face of the massive influx of refugees pouring into the city from nearby Aleppo, seeking to flee the Syrian civil war, Bloomberg reported. “I have never felt anything like it in the 40 years I’ve lived,” Erdem, a resident of the city, told BBC News. “We were shaken at least three times very strongly, like a baby in a crib.”

The dome and east-facing wall of the nearby 17th century Şirvani Mosque also partially caved in during the quake, CNN reported, citing Anadolu.

The massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Turkey on Sunday was devastating and now authorities fear that there may be as many as 20,000 deaths from the series of quakes.

The earthquake in Turkey was calamitous.  Conservative Treehouse reported:
According to the Associated Press, 5,600 buildings have collapsed and several of them came down today during aftershocks amid search and rescue operations.  The current recorded death toll is over 4,300 people, with the World Health Organization (WHO) predicting the total loss of life could exceed 20,000.  This is just horrific.
The estimated 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit over an area of several major population centers. The Guardian reports, “the population of the ten provinces in southern Turkey affected by the earthquakes are home to 13.5 million people. So far, according to the Andalou agency, more than 5,600 buildings have collapsed.

It is just after 6am in Turkey, and we’re seeing stories of people rescued after a very long day and night, which means they survived not only the rubble’s collapse but the cold. There are many, many more who have not yet been found, with the WHO predicting the death toll could reach 20,000 in the coming days. For now, here are videos of a three-year-old toddler and a woman who were freed from collapsed buildings by rescuers.” (link)
Here is a video of multiple buildings collapsing in Turkey.
