We have events behind us, catastrophic events, of which humanity has become more and more aware that they have not happened in this intensity since history was written. The past era was one in which people here on earth cared as little as possible about the supersensible world. You must not, if you are to take such a matter seriously, confuse what might be called outward worship and lip-service, with a real orientation towards the supersensible world.
It is really not very difficult to see that what people have regarded for centuries as a certain religiosity is more of an outer matter, that it is not a real orientation towards the supersensible world. Men have hitherto lived with a certain carelessness about the supersensible world. And the turn of the times today requires humanity to reorient itself to the spiritual worlds. People must learn to look again at these supersensible worlds, but in a different way than is often imagined today.
People like to stick to the current, easy-going belief that doesn’t require much inner effort. Those who have remained with this facile belief are the greatest enemies of true modern progress. The churches that oppose the new ways to transcendence, they are in truth the cause of ever more materialistic and materialistic impulses coming into humanity. It is necessary today to learn to see in the supersensible worlds in a very concrete way.
