Physician David Drew Pinsky, commonly referred to as Dr. Drew, hammered the media early last month for over-sensationalizing the coronavirus outbreak and doubled down on his remarks late last week.

During an interview early last month on Daily Blast Live, Dr. Drew said, “We are not overreacting; the press is overreacting, and it makes me furious.”
“The press should not be reporting medical stories as though they know how to report it,” Dr. Drew continued. “If we have a pandemic, I won’t know how to tell that we’re actually having a pandemic because everything is an emergency. People that are infectious disease specialists, the CDC, the epidemiologist[s], need to take this very seriously. The press needs to shut up because you’re more likely to die of influenza right now.”
Dr. Drew appeared on the same show late last week where he doubled down on his comments and threw water on the notion that Vice President Mike Pence was not capable of leading the Coronavirus Task Force.
“Let me frame it this way: we have in the United States 24 million cases of flu-like illness, 180,000 hospitalizations, 16,000 dead from influenza,” Dr. Drew said. “Why is that not being reported? Why isn’t the message: get your flu shot?”

DAILY BLAST LIVE: So you still Dr. Drew, you still feel as passionate as you did a couple of weeks ago?
DR. DREW: Let me frame it this way: we have in the United States 24 million cases of flu-like illness, 180,000 hospitalizations, 16,000 dead from influenza. Why is that not being reported? Why isn’t the message: get your flu shot? We have zero deaths from coronavirus, we have almost no cases. It’s coming here. That community transmitted case you purported on from UC Davis, that means that it’s far milder than we know it is and there are people walking around out there with the virus that don’t even know they have it, it’s so mild. So, it’s going to be much more widespread than we knew, it’s going to be much milder than we knew, the 1.7 % fatality rate is going to fall. Where was the press during the Mediterranean corona outbreak where the fatality rate was 41%? If they wanted to get crazed about something, why didn’t they get crazed about MERS or SARS? This is an overblown press created hysteria. Now, the countries China, United States, Europe, are responding appropriately and very diligently. We’re going to contain this thing. We’ve already got a vaccine in study right now in human subjects. So, this thing is well in hand, President Trump is absolutely correct he allocated $2.5 billion dollars for this. Chuck Schumer asked for $8 billion, my response is, hey man we got a homeless problem in Southern California and in Denver, would you please give us some of that $8 billion and forget about the coronavirus?
DAILY BLAST LIVE: To my point and I’m gonna challenge you on this, do you really believe that Pence is the right person to handle this considering how he mishandled the HIV epidemic in 2015 with the needle exchange program which one study said actually contributed to more deaths?
DR. DREW: I don’t know what they’re talking about. We used to point at the way Indiana responded to the opiate of the HIV epidemic as the model for the country. I don’t know what they’re talking about. The only reason I felt comfortable with Pence as vice-president was I was aware of his track record in Indiana in handling these serious problems and they handle them better than most states did, almost any other states. So, I don’t know what the hell people are talking about. That is fake news, we used to look at Indiana as a, as an appropriate response to the opiate epidemic we’re really responding to at the time, and they also had a massive effect on HIV and AIDS. Yes, it took everybody a while to respond properly to it, but they really took care of business in Indiana, so I have no idea what people are talking about. Whether Pence is the right person, look the right people are Anthony Fauci of the CDC. Dr. Fauci will tell you what’s going on, when you need to worry … that guy’s been on top of infectious disease for 30 years. When there’s a problem, he will let us know and he’s been saying exactly what I’ve been saying the whole way. Look to him, not me, and not even Vice President Pence, look at guys like Anthony Fauci whose responsibility is to contain these things.

Coronavirus: Stay Calm and Avoid the Hype

There is a meme that has been going viral on Facebook, saying, “Stay calm and wash your hands” with regard to the coronavirus scare.  That is certainly good advice.  It might be a good follow-up to caution those on social media to “Stay calm and avoid the hype” with regard to the blazing headlines and stories across all of the various media platforms.  If one didn’t know better, the coronavirus outbreak has been the second coming of the bubonic plague, more commonly referred to as Black Death, that wiped out a third of the European population in the mid-1300s.
Clearly, the coronavirus is something not to be ignored when thousands have lost their lives, mostly in China.  But so far, the threat has been blown completely out of proportion.  With the competition from the old media having lost so much of their power to the new media in the last ten to twenty years, they need events like the spread of the coronavirus to exaggerate in order to stay relevant.  But staying relevant does not necessarily benefit the public when information is skewed to scare people into thinking and feeling a certain way.
First, Russian collusion dominated the headlines, then impeachment, and now the coronavirus outbreak.  Democrats are trying to use it to their advantage once again to damage Trump politically now that they’ve tried everything else and failed.
Listening to Tim Cook during his recent interview with Susan Li on the Fox Business Network, the coronavirus has been just a blip on business operations: the workers in China involved in producing Apple products are on their way back to work.  Some of the statements he made in the course of the interview included “I’m optimistic that the coronavirus is getting under control” and “Apple is fundamentally sound.”  But based on most of the reporting for the last week, one would think the end of the world is at hand, much in the way a major hurricane or other natural disasters are now reported.  The events are clearly tragic for those affected, but they will shortly come to an end, and life will go on.  The coronavirus, too, will pass, with the vast majority of people unaffected.
A local NBC affiliate serving northeast Ohio, WKYC, broadcast a story, “Stay Vigilant, Not Scared,” that went against the grain of the majority of stories on the subject by talking about how the coronavirus outbreak is not a pandemic and how people have survived many health scares in the past that have been similar in nature, particularly the SARS and MERS outbreaks, and the risk is extremely low, and the flu remains a bigger threat to Americans.  Dr. Drew Pinsky, a noted addiction specialist who was ousted from CNN because of his conservative-leaning point of view, echoed and amplified this sentiment to a broader audience on the YouTube channel Daily Blast Live.  Rush Limbaugh highlighted Pinsky’s statements on the Daily Blast podcast during his Friday broadcast.  (A transcript of the segment from Limbaugh is here.)  The following comment is from the transcript, where Dr. Drew puts the current outbreak into context with regard to normal influenza:

PINSKY: We have in the United States 24 million cases of flu-like illness, 180,000 hospitalizations, 16,000 dead from influenza.  We have zero deaths from coronavirus.  [The number has since gone up a little. —ed]  We have almost no cases.  There are people walking around out there with the virus that don’t even know they have it, it’s so mild.  So it’s going to be much more widespread than we knew.  It’s going to be much milder than we knew.  The 1.7% fatality rate is going to fall.  Where was the press during the Mediterranean Corona outbreak, where the fatality rate was 41%?  Why didn’t they get crazed about MERS or SARS?  This is an overblown press-created hysteria.  This thing is well in hand.  President Trump is absolutely correct.

Even an editorial in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine put the coronavirus outbreak into its proper perspective:

[T]he overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively.

Even an American who caught the virus while on a cruise ship wrote for the Washington Post what it was like to have it and described it as not all that terrible.  Certainly, no one wants to get it, but it doesn’t sound nearly as dangerous to a person’s health or as lethal as it’s been portrayed.  From the article “I have the coronavirus. So far, it isn’t that bad“:

I am in my late 60s, and the sickest I’ve ever been was when I had bronchitis several years ago.  That laid me out on my back for a few days.  This has been much easier: no chills, no body aches.  I breathe easily, and I don’t have a stuffy nose.  My chest feels tight, and I have coughing spells.  If I were at home with similar symptoms, I probably would have gone to work as usual[.] … [M]y treatment has consisted of what felt like gallons and gallons of Gatorade — and, when my fever rose just above 100 degrees, some ibuprofen.

Based on all of the media coverage, one would think the apocalypse has arrived.  The coronavirus outbreak will further damage their credibility by making dire warnings that essentially everyone needs to be prepared to avoid his imminent demise.  Even Tucker Carlson has been snookered and bought into the hype.  This has been surprising coming from someone who spots and exposes media cons on a regular basis. When all is said and done, it will be one more case of crying wolf and further hasten the extinction of the mainstream media as a credible source of information.

“Catastrophic”: Iranian Whistleblower Claims Government Hiding True Number of Coronavirus Victims

A whistleblower who works at a hospital in Iran claims that authorities are hiding the true scale of the coronavirus outbreak and that the real numbers are “catastrophic.”
Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet highlights the case of an anonymous female employee at Shohadaye Yaftabad Hospital in Tehran who posted an audio file to Telegram in which she claimed that 17 people had already died at her hospital.
“Now I risk my life and leave this voicemail. What I have seen with my own eyes is that the situation is much more catastrophic than our state media says. When I worked at the hospital yesterday, 17 people died of the coronavirus,” she said.
Officials in Iran have confirmed 388 confirmed Covid-19 cases and 34 related deaths. However, at the time of the whistleblower’s warning on Monday, authorities said that just 3 people had died across the entire country.
According to the woman, the true coronavirus situation in Iran is “catastrophic” and 50-60 per cent of people infected are dying.
“One reason for the high Iranian death toll may be that the number of coronas infected is under-reported,” reports Aftonbladet. “In the rest of the world, two percent of those infected are estimated to have died.”
While there is no way to verify the woman’s claims, similar assertions have been made in China with many suggesting that the true scale of the outbreak is being significantly under-reported in order to prevent mass panic.

“What Are The Odds?” – A Timeline Of Facts Linking Covid-19, HIV, & Wuhan’s Secret Bio-Lab

A disclaimer: I am not a virologist. This is me synthesizing what we have learned since the outbreak began and reviewing public scientific papers. I believe each of the following statements is a solid fact, backed up by a citation. 
I also want to say that I understand some people are worried about blame being cast for this outbreak. Obviously we are all in this together, and my intention here is not to cast blame. These links overwhelmingly compel further scrutiny, but are not conclusive.
I do think however that information is being downplayed and suppressed by some scientists and media outlets and it’s our duty to find out the facts about this virus, do what we can to mitigate the outbreak, and prevent it from happening again.

So there’s original SARS, which is a type of coronavirus. SARS infects cells through the ACE2 receptor in hosts.
The S spike protein plays a key role in how the virus infects cells. Each of the little spikes that surround the coronavirus is a spike protein (or S protein). That’s what gives the coronavirus it’s name – it’s “crown” of these spikes.

The S protein binds to the targeted cell through the ACE2 receptor, and boom, your cell is infected and becomes a virus replication factory.

After the first SARS outbreak, there was a “land rush” to find other coronaviruses. A collection of SARS-*like* coronaviruses was isolated in several horseshoe bat species over 10 years ago, called SARS-like CoVs, or SL-CoVs. Not SARS exactly, but coronaviruses similar to SARS.
In 2007, a team of researchers based in Wuhan, in conjunction with an Australian laboratory, conducted a study with SARS, a SARS-like coronavirus, and HIV-1.

The researchers noted that if small changes were made to the S protein, it broke how SARS-CoV worked – it could no longer go in via ACE2. So they inferred the S protein was critical to the SARS attack vector. 

They also predicted based on the S-ACE2 binding structure, that SARS-like CoVs were not able to use this same attack method (ACE2 mediation).
They decided to create a pseudovirus where they essentially put a SARS-like CoV in a HIV envelope. 
It worked.
Using an HIV envelope, they replaced the RBD (receptor binding domain) of SL-CoV with that of SARS-CoV, and used it to successfully infect bats through ACE2 mediation.

12 years goes by…

A SARS-like CoV begins sweeping the globe that is far more infectious than previous outbreaks.
Ground Zero for this outbreak (not first human patient, but first spreading event) is considered to be Wuhan Seafood Market.
Wuhan Seafood Market is 20 miles from the National Biosafety Laboratory at Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Amidst the outbreak, a team of Indian bioinformatics specialists at Delhi University released a paper pre-print…

COVID-19 has a unique sequence about 1,378 nucleotide base pairs long that is not found in related coronaviruses. They claimed to identify genetic similarities in this unique material between COVID-19 and HIV-1. 
Specifically, they isolated 4 short genetic sequences in key protein structures (the receptor binding domain, or RBD).



Two of the sequences were perfect matches (albeit, short), and two of the sequences were matched but each with an additional string of non-matching material appearing in the middle of the sequence.

The paper was criticized and numerous attempts have been made to debunk it. After the criticism, the authors voluntarily withdrew it, intending to revise it based on comments made about their technical approach and conclusions.
One key debunking attempt claims this:

The same sequences are found in a variant called BetaCoV/bat/Yunnan/RaTG13/2013, which had been found “in the wild” in bats.

This is an attempt to prove that it was not engineered, but mutated naturally in the wild.
But there’s a problem…
This strain was only known by and studied at the Wuhan Virology Institute, and although they claim it was discovered in 2013, it wasn’t published or shared with the scientific community until immediately after the Indian paper, on January 27, 2020.
