(Reuters) - An active shooter was reported at a food festival in California on Sunday and a police spokesman said there are casualties.
Few other details were immediately available. NBC Bay Area reported that ambulance crews were told 11 people "were down" after shots rang out at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, an annual event in south of San Jose.
Videos posted on social media appeared to show festival attendees scattering in confusion as at least one loud popping sound could be heard in the background.
"What's going on?" a woman can be heard asking on one video. "Who'd shoot up a garlic festival?"

GILROY — Police are at the scene of an apparent shooting with more than one person hit at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, authorities said.
Police responded to the festival grounds at Christmas Hill Park near Miller Avenue and Uvas Park Drive around 5:30 p.m., but few details of the shooting were immediately available.

A dispatcher answering a Gilroy police line said an inquiry about the reports was ‘inappropriate’ and sent a caller to voicemail.
Evenny Reyes, 13, spent the day at the festival with her friends and some relatives.
“We were just leaving and we saw a guy with a bandana wrapped around his leg because he got shot. And there were people on the ground, crying,” said Reyes. “There was a little kid hurt on the ground. People were throwing tables and cutting fences to get out.”
Reyes said she didn’t run at first, because the gunshots sounded like fireworks. “It started going for five minutes, maybe three. It was like the movies — everyone was crying, people were screaming.”
As of 6:40 p.m., Katherine Filice, who has headed the festival’s promotional effort for several years, said the PR team members were “all OK” but that she had no further information as the situation at Christmas Hill Park was still fluid.
The shooting occurred as the 41st annual event — one of the nation’s most famous food festivals — was wrapping up its three-day run. Besides drawing food lovers from around the country, the festival serves as Gilroy’s top fund-raiser for the year, with volunteers staffing the event to earn money for their clubs, schools and other nonprofit groups. Since 1979, the festival has raised more than $11.7 million for local nonprofits and schools.
6 pm was the closing time, but the entrance gates were to have closed one hour prior to that.

The final hours of the famed Gilroy Garlic Festival were shattered Sunday evening when a gunman with an assault rifle opened fire on the crowd, killing at least three people and injuring 15 others, according to officials in the bucolic California city 30 miles south of San Jose.
A 6-year-old boy was among the victims, according to NBC Bay Area..
The shooter also was shot and killed minutes after the attack began, Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said.
“This is one of those press conferences that you never want to give in your community,” he said. “It’s sort of a nightmare that you hope to never have to live in reality, but we find ourselves in the circumstances where we have to live it today.”
The attack happened at 5:41 p.m. as the popular three-day festival wrapped up, leaving visitors running for their lives and police looking for a man in camouflage with a “long-barreled rifle.”
Initial reports said the shooter entered the festival area from a creek area outside of Christmas Hill Park, where the festival was held.
Smithee said the shooter used some type of tool to cut through a fence to get into the festival, avoiding the metal detectors and other security.
Police said a manhunt was underway for a second person with suspected ties to the attack. A description was not released.
“We believe based on witness statements that there was a second individual involved in some way,” Smithee said at a 10 p.m. news conference. “We just don’t know in what way.”
Smithee said he had no information on a possible motive for Sunday’s violence.
Names of the victims were not immediately released, but NBC Bay Area reported late Sunday that one of the victims was Steven Romero, 6. The TV station said family confirmed that Steven was shot along with other family members.

Santino William Legan has been identified as the 19-year-old suspect accused of killing three people and wounding several others in a mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California, according to CBS News. The shooting Sunday night on the final day of the annual charity event at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy left three dead, 12 injured and the suspected shooter, Legan, killed by police. Several others were injured in the chaos after shots were fired, but were not shot, authorities said.
The dead include 6-year-old Stephen Romero. Romero’s grandmother and mother were also shot, but are expected to survive. A GoFundMe was established to help the family pay for the child’s funeral. The two others killed are an 13-year-year-old girl and a man in his 20s, police said. They have not yet been named.
Police said he was armed with an “an SKS …an AK-47-type assault rifle” that was “purchased legally” by Legan in Nevada on July 9. Legan, of Gilroy, was reportedly visiting or living with family members in Nevada.

Gilroy Police Chief Scott Smithee said Sunday night that Legan “used a tool to cut through a fence to gain access” to the festival grounds.

Police had been hunting a second suspect since the shooting, but as of Monday morning, police not only have not announced a capture, Smithee said “we really don’t know” if there is a second suspect.
A motive for the shooting has not yet been made public.
The shooting happened at the park near Miller Avenue and Uvas Park Drive about 5:40 p.m. local time. The festival was set to end about 6 p.m.
One witness who told reporters they’d come face to face with the gunman and asked why he was doing this was told, “Because I’m really angry.”
According to a CNN report, a neighbor of the Legan’s recognized the young man saying that while she did not know the family personally, she remarked that Legan and his siblings are “…very nice kids. When I found out this morning, I was shocked. This is a quiet place.”
